Story for the Week
Fifty books in twelve months. That’s my standard goal every year. Some years I read more, like last year. Occasionally, I read less, but not usually. This year, that’s the goal again.
I have two main sources for what I read throughout the year. As an Amazon Prime member, I am eligible for a free new release each month, sometimes two, and of course, I purchase recommended books or books by my favorite authors. I also am a NetGalley reviewer, so I’ll request advance reader copies (ARCs) and review them on or before release.
Recently, I opted in to a new source: The Creepy Book Club. I discovered The Creepy Book Club on TikTok because I follow @lotsamiles, whose real name is Ashley and who founded the club with her best friend Emily. If you’re a fan of mysteries, thrillers, suspense, psychological drama, I suggest you check it out.
You can choose between three levels of membership: basic, premium, and elite. All levels provide access to book spoiler discussion forums, access to RSVP to events and retreats, and entry in a monthly giveaway. The premium membership offers a discount on Creepy Book Club merchandise. For both the basic and premium memberships, you buy the book yourself from whatever source you want. The elite membership offers a beautifully packaged hard cover of the book of the month.
I subscribed to the basic plan because I read everything on my Kindle, so I don’t need the hardcover shipment, and I don’t buy a ton of merch. They have quite the collection though (and there’s a hoodie I have my eye on), so I might find myself subscribing to the premium level if I find myself buying merch on a regular basis. I’ve never been a member of a book club, but I’m looking forward to this one.
Currently, my reading/reviewing queue contains 14 titles: three Creepy Book Club purchases, two direct Amazon purchases, and nine NetGalley ARCs. Some of them I’ve already read, and I have the blog posts scheduled. All of them are previewed below in the order I’ll be reviewing them.
Enjoy! And here’s hoping that in this New Year we all achieve our goals and find our happiness.
Upcoming Reviews in 2023
Picking Up the Pieces by Amanda Prowse—release date January 10, 2023
As Nora and her British Army officer husband, Gordy, pack up yet another home and leave the sun of Cyprus for the drizzle of England, she can’t shake a feeling of regret―at her failure to follow her own dreams, but also, if she’s honest, at having ended up an officer’s wife at all, drifting through a life of temporary homes and temporary relationships.
Since losing her parents at a young age, Nora’s life has been lacking an anchor: someone or something to make her feel secure. Her marriage has been her only permanent relationship, and just as even that appears to be fizzling out, a tragedy forces Nora into the role of legal guardian to her seven-year-old nephew, Ted. Faced suddenly with a responsibility she never dreamed of, how can Nora possibly offer the boy the kind of unconditional love he deserves, when she’s never experienced it for herself?
But as she navigates the precarious and unfamiliar world of parenthood, Nora begins to see herself through Ted’s eyes, as someone worthy of love and even joy. When she’s welcomed into the previously intimidating huddle of mums at the school gate, she has to wonder: is it too late to smash down the other barriers she’s built―and to have a second chance at a happy marriage with Gordy?

The Nightmare Man by J.H. Markert—release date January 10, 2023
Blackwood mansion looms, surrounded by nightmare pines, atop the hill over the small town of Crooked Tree. Ben Bookman, bestselling novelist and heir to the Blackwood estate, spent a weekend at the ancestral home to finish writing his latest horror novel, The Scarecrow. Now, on the eve of the book’s release, the terrible story within begins to unfold in real life.
Detective Mills arrives at the scene of a gruesome murder: a family butchered and bundled inside cocoons stitched from corn husks, and hung from the rafters of a barn, eerily mirroring the opening of Bookman’s latest novel. When another family is killed in a similar manner, Mills, along with his daughter, rookie detective Samantha Blue, is determined to find the link to the book—and the killer—before the story reaches its chilling climax.
As the series of “Scarecrow crimes” continues to mirror the book, Ben quickly becomes the prime suspect. He can’t remember much from the night he finished writing the novel, but he knows he wrote it in The Atrium, his grandfather’s forbidden room full of numbered books. Thousands of books. Books without words.
As Ben digs deep into Blackwood’s history he learns he may have triggered a release of something trapped long ago—and it won’t stop with the horrors buried within the pages of his book.

No Strangers Here by Carlene O’Connor—release date October 25, 2022
On a rocky beach in the southwest of Ireland, the body of Johnny O’Reilly, sixty-nine years old and dressed in a suit and his dancing shoes, is propped on a boulder, staring sightlessly out to sea. But dig a bit deeper, and there’s always much more to find. And when Detective Inspector Cormac O’Brien is dispatched out of Killarney to lead the murder inquiry, he’s determined to unearth every last buried secret.
Dimpna Wilde hasn’t been home in years. As picturesque as Dingle may be for tourists in search of their roots and the perfect jumper, to her it means family drama and personal complications. In fairness, Dublin hasn’t worked out quite as she hoped either. Faced with a triple bombshell—her mother rumored to be in a relationship with Johnny, her father’s dementia is escalating, and her brother is avoiding her calls—Dimpna moves back to clear her family of suspicion.
Despite plenty of other suspects, the guards are crawling over the Wildes. But the horse business can be a brutal one, and as Dimpna becomes more involved with her old acquaintances and haunts, the depth of lingering grudges becomes clear. Theft, extortion, jealousy and greed. As Dimpna takes over the family practice, she’s in a race with the detective inspector to uncover the dark, twisting truth, no matter how close to home it strikes….
